The “Good News” of Catholic Education

“Go, proclaim the gospel to all nations” — this is the mandate given by Jesus Christ to the disciples, to preach the good news of salvation to all who will hear it. This mission of evangelization is fulfilled in a unique way at Chesterton Academy, because, like the disciples on the Road to Emmaus, our formation of young people is done essentially through conversation: conversation which leads to greater interior conversion. Through an integrated Catholic education, our students come to know and love God through pursuit of wisdom found in human and divine truth, received from the “great books” of Western Civilization.

“Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another. Whatever the soul is like, it will have to be passed on somehow, consciously or unconsciously, and that transition may be called education. ... What we need is to have a culture before we hand it down.”

-G.K. Chesterton

At Chesterton Academy, the good news is proclaimed daily: through Mass, in the science and history classrooms, through dialectic in philosophy, and especially through the common life together as a school community. Rather than replace the role of parents, we see ourselves as collaborators in support of the primary role of parents in the education of their children. This means that our school community engages the entire family, not just the student, as we journey on a pilgrimage of grace together in order to build up a Culture of Life in Portland and SW Washington.
