Teaching Position

The Chesterton Academy of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati (CABPGF) in Portland, Ore. is seeking applicants for teachers in all disciplines: Humanities (literature, history, philosophy, and theology), Latin, choir, debate and math/science. The ability and desire to teach in a variety of disciplines is considered an asset. Having taught or previously been educated in classical schools is desirable.

Our mission is to bring the joyfully classical Catholic education developed by the Chesterton Schools Network to the greater Portland area. We strive not only to impart a marvelous education, but also to provide for the formation of a new generation of leaders and saints through daily Mass and spiritual formation.

The Chesterton Schools Network provides extensive curriculum materials for all courses in the curriculum, which is both an aid for class preparation and a means to consistency in teaching the material. Many courses at Chesterton Academy are taught in a Socratic-discussion format. The successful candidate must be able to lead a discussion driven classroom and embrace the integration of subject material throughout the rigorous curriculum. Key skills include  clear communication and the ability to establish a classroom environment of joy, respect, wonder, and deep engagement.

Teachers are expected to demonstrate superior teaching ability and understanding of the curriculum material, adherence to the Chesterton Academy syllabi, excellent classroom management, and especially to promote a well-ordered, joy-filled culture. Additional duties and activities may be assigned by the headmaster. Full-time faculty members are required to attend daily Mass with the entire student body and participate in spiritual retreats or other school activities. A love for Catholic liberal education and a desire for a deeper encounter with truth, goodness, and beauty are vital attributes.

The candidate must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing; all faculty and staff are required to take the Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church. Candidates ideally have some previous teaching experience, demonstrate excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, and possess experience with contributing to the vision and mission of an apostolic/educational enterprise. A Bachelor's degree must be completed by time of hire.
